CIArb London is delighted to be holding the first in-person event at the new IDRC building. We have a distinguished panel of speakers who will be discussing the relationship between mediation and the courts, and how that relationship is evolving. The seminar will explore confidentiality and privilege, good faith and compulsion, refusal to mediate and developments in relevant case law.

The seminar will include a Q & A session followed by drinks on the outside terrace (weather permitting)

Speakers

▪ Lady Justice Asplin was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1984. She was appointed both a Master of the Bench and Queen’s Counsel in 2002. She was made a Deputy High Court Judge in 2007 and a Justice of the High Court (Chancery Division) in October 2012. She has written a Guide to the Chancery Applications Court for Litigants in Person. She was sworn in as a Lady Justice of the Court of Appeal in October 2017. In March 2021, she was appointed as Chair of the Judicial ADR Liaison Committee.

▪ Jane Andrewartha is a Litigation and Arbitration partner of Clyde & Co, advising on major international multi- party disputes over many sectors. Jane has been a mediator for more than 25 years and conducts an extensive mediation practice. Jane is regarded as one of the UK’s foremost mediators and is one of very few who maintains a full legal practice alongside her busy mediation work, being named Cross-Border Mediator of the Year (2012), Who’s Who Legal: Mediation “Global Elite Thought Leader” (2018), and is recognised in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame for “Continued Excellence” (2018-2021). Jane is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a former Director of CEDR and a member of the Panel of Independent Mediators. She holds various positions in the insurance industry including that of Chair of a London insurance company and is a member of the Panel of Chairmen of the Lloyds Enforcement Tribunal. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of London.

▪ Jon Lang became a full-time mediator in May 2005, having spent almost twenty years as a solicitor in private practice, the last six as a partner in the disputes group of White & Case in London. CEDR accredited, Jon has acted as an expert in mediation, is a past Chair of the Mediation Committee of the International Bar Association and a member of CPR’s Panel of Distinguished Neutrals. Jon has been listed in the first tier of mediator rankings of both the Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 directories (and in The International Who’s Who of Commercial Mediators) for several years and mediates a broad range of commercial disputes. Jon is a longstanding member of IPOS Mediation whose clerks administer his practice.

▪ Gill Mansfield is a full-time commercial mediator. She was called to the Bar (Lincoln’s Inn) in 1994 and spent much of her 25-year legal career in Head of Legal and General Counsel roles working with award winning media & entertainment companies, technology companies, multi-national corporations and household name brands. CEDR accredited in 2006, she is a member of the mediation panels at CEDR, LCAM and the CIArb in London, WIPO in Geneva and CPR’s Panel of Distinguished Neutrals in New York. Gill is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Committee Member of CIArb London. She is also a board adviser to a company in the tech-for-good space.

This is a landmark seminar for the IDRC, marking the opening of their new building, and it is also the first in-person seminar of the London Branch of the CIArb in 17 months. Attendees will be welcomed with coffee and soft drinks from 5:30 pm. The seminar will begin at 6 pm and will last about one and a half hours. Following the seminar, food and drinks will be served on the outside terrace at the IDRC (weather permitting).
