The CIArb London Branch and the International Arbitration Centre (IAC) would like to invite you to join us for a virtual evening reflecting on the arbitration influencer 2020. Remote hearings were unthinkable in 2019. The pandemic caused a shift in mindsets and Zoom and other video conferencing platforms entered our arbitration proceedings. Our panel will address how proceedings have changed in 2020 and what lies ahead for the Future. Like Zoom we have also heard the name Chubb more than once in 2020 eagerly awaiting guidance and clarification from the Supreme Court in two decisions that have now set the scene for arbitration going forward. The second panel is going to look at the implications ahead resulting out of the two supreme court judgements.

John Judge is a leading independent arbitrator specialising in international commercial disputes. He was at Stikeman Elliott LLP in Toronto for over 35 years where he left as senior partner to launch his arbitrator practice and joined Int-Arb Arbitrators in 2020. John is also a founding member of Arbitration Place (Toronto). John has sat as arbitrator and chair on substantial international disputes under ICC, LCIA, AAA-ICDR, SIAC, BCICAC and AdHoc rules in a variety of seats including London, New York, Paris, Houston, Washington, Canada and the Middle-East.

Lucinda Brabazon is a Senior Associate at Clifford Chance in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group. Her practice focuses on the oil, gas, infrastructure and aviation sectors. Lucinda was admitted as an Australian lawyer in 2015 and called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2019. She has a Masters in International Commercial Law from UCL

David Joseph QC, the moderator for the second panel, is a barrister at Essex Court Chambers and acts as both counsel and as arbitrator. He is well-recognised not only in the English courts but across the common law world as an authority in the twin fields of international arbitration and jurisdiction disputes and is author of Jurisdiction and Arbitration Agreements and their Enforcement. He is consistently recommended in the top tier of each of the UK and global directories in the field of international arbitration as well as in commercial litigation, general insurance and aerospace. In 2013 he was chosen as Silk of the Year in International Commercial Arbitration by both Chambers Directory and the Legal 500.

Peter Ashford is a Partner at Fox Williams. He has particular expertise in international commercial arbitration and also acts in litigation, mediation, expert determination and negotiations. Peter is a widely published author, commentator and lecturer, including the Handbook on International Commercial Arbitration published by Juris Publishing of New York in 2014; the Guide to the IBA Rules on the Taking of Evidence in International Arbitration and the Guide to the IBA Guidelines on Party Representation in International Arbitration.

Julia Dias QC is a barrister at 7KBW Chambers. She was their first female tenant and rapidly acquired a formidable reputation as a leading commercial junior before taking silk in 2008. She is also a member of the Gibraltar Bar, to which she was called in 1994. Julia’s principal areas of practice are in arbitration, shipping, insurance and reinsurance and professional negligence. She is increasingly in demand as an arbitrator and also sits regularly as a Deputy High Court Judge.
