"Green" ADR: How do we recalibrate for the future?

CIArb London and the LCIA are pleased to present a discussion of the recent initiatives to manage ADR processes in a sustainable way. The panel will discuss the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations and the World Mediators Alliance on Climate Change, which were both established in 2020 in order to promote environmentally friendly best practice in arbitration and mediation. The panel will also discuss the lessons that have been learned during the pandemic about ways to resolve disputes while minimizing the climate impact.
Jamie Harrison is the Deputy Director General of the LCIA. He joined the LCIA after nearly 8 years in Singapore, where he set up and managed the Singapore office of Addleshaw Goddard LLP. Prior to that he worked at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in London and Hong Kong, then at Morgan Lewis LLP, and afterwards at Winston & Strawn LLP where he led the London dispute resolution practice. He has represented clients in disputes throughout the world under the rules of LCIA, ICC, SIAC, HKIAC, CIETAC, JAMS, UNCITRAL and ICSID.
Lucy Greenwood is an independent arbitrator specializing in commercial and investment disputes. She has practised international arbitration since 1998 and has acted as arbitrator in over 50 arbitrations since becoming a full time arbitrator in 2017. She is on the panels of arbitrators of many arbitral institutions throughout the world. Lucy is a Trustee of the CIArb and is one of the founders of the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations. In 2019, she initiated the Green Pledge for Arbitration (see here).
Dr Anna Howard is a researcher in mediation at Queen Mary University of London. Before joining QMUL, she was in private practice at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Field Fisher in London, then a lecturer in law at Singapore Management University. A qualified mediator, she is also a member of the UNCITRAL Academic Forum on Investor-State Dispute Settlement. She is a member of the Facilitators’ Group of the World Mediators Alliance on Climate Change, which promotes a Green Pledge for Mediation (see here).
Mia Forbes Pirie is a mediator and facilitator. She originally qualified as a solicitor at Ashurst LLP, then left to obtain a Masters of Science in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London. She worked for several years on two of the world’s leading energy efficiency programmes (in the UK and the US) and has also advised industry and international organisations, including the European Commission, on developing energy efficiency regulation. Much of her work is focused on sustainability, energy and the environment.
Michelle Bradfield is a partner at Jones Day in London. She has significant experience in boundary disputes between states, maritime disputes, investment treaty arbitration and international commercial arbitration under the rules of many institutions throughout the world. She also lectures at Kings College London and, prior to working in London, she was a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law at Cambridge. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations.

Nicholas Stewart QC (moderator and Vice-Chair, CIArb London) is an arbitrator and mediator. He is a Deputy High Court Judge, an Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester and a former chair of the Bar Human Rights Committee. Alongside his commercial practice, he is an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and has appeared as counsel at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague.
