This event is jointly organised by the London Branch and the Peruvian Chapter of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb). It is generously hosted by Baker Botts (UK) LLP.
Our panel of experts will compare the enforcement of arbitration awards in different Latin American jurisdictions and England and Wales. They will discuss current trends and address complications arising, including those occasioned by the involvement of state-related entities and sovereign immunity.

SPEAKER BIOS:
Gloria Alvarez FCIArb, PhD
Gloria Alvarez is an international academic on international dispute resolution energy and investment law. She has in-depth knowledge of commercial law in civil and common law systems, acts as legal expert and independent arbitrator (ICC, ICSID, LCIA, CAM, CCL and CANACO experience). She worked as in-house lawyer in a multinational company and arbitration case manager in an arbitral institution.
Her academic work spans in the areas of international economic law, climate and social justice. She has held prestigious academic posts at the Shanghai University of Finance, Queen Mary University of London, Max Planck Institute (Luxemburg), Lauterpacht Centre (University of Cambridge) and a Research Associate at UKERC (EPSRC Grant).
Gloria has published the following leading books: International Arbitration in Latin America: Energy and Natural Resources Disputes (Kluwer 2021), Routledge Handbook of Energy Law (Routledge 2020), and The ICSID Convention, Regulations and Rules: A Practical Commentary (Elgar 2019). She also sits in the Editorial Board of ICSID Review, Journal of International Arbitration and European Investment Law and Arbitration Review.
Ernesto Féliz De Jesús, PhD
Ernesto Féliz de Jesús is a civil and common law qualified lawyer admitted in Dominican Republic and England and Wales, who also holds a doctorate in public international law from the University of Oxford. He is an experienced practitioner in public international law, in commercial arbitration and in construction arbitration, with a focus on Latin American disputes.
As Senior Associate at Baker Botts, Ernesto has acted as counsel for private sector and State-owned entities and for sovereign States in institutional and in ad hoc arbitrations (ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC and CAM Santiago). He has also provided advice on the international and domestic legal protections available for transnational investments, on construction law and on numerous areas of public international law, such as maritime delimitation issues, the law of the sea, the law of state responsibility, the law of treaties and international humanitarian law.
Ernesto has been recognized as a “Rising Star” in Public International Law (Legal 500 UK, 2022-2024) and in International Arbitration (Legal 500 Latin America, 2024), as well as “One to Watch” in Administrative and Public Law (Best Lawyers UK, 2023-2025) and in International Arbitration (Best Lawyers UK, 2024-2025).
Micaela Ossio Maguiña, LLM
Micaela Ossio Maguiña is a civil and common law qualified lawyer admitted in Peru and England and Wales, who also holds an LLM degree from Cornell University. She is a Senior Associate at Pogust Goodhead.
Micaela has advertised Claimants as well as sovereign states in investment and commercial arbitration disputes. She has extensive experience in proceedings conducted under the arbitration rules of ICSID, UNCITRAL, and ICC.
She has also acted in several arbitration proceedings administered by the Peruvian Chamber of Commerce. She has advised clients in a variety of different sectors, including oil & gas, mining, banking, construction, insurance, and pharmaceuticals, among others.
José Gregorio Torrealba R., LLM
José Gregorio Torrealba is a civil and common law qualified lawyer admitted in Venezuela and England and Wales, who also holds an LLM degree from King’s College London and is pursuing a PhD from the same university. He is Partner and CEO of JGTorrealba. He is also a member of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC for the period 2024-2027.
José Gregorio has developed his career in highly prestigious law firms, standing out for more than 15 years as a leader in the areas of Public and Regulatory Law, Arbitration and Infrastructure at one of the leading firms based in Venezuela with a marked international profile. He has vast experience in public procurement, foreign investment protection, competition law, consumer protection, general administrative law, national and international litigation and arbitration.
José Gregorio also has an extensive academic career. He has held positions as undergraduate professor at the Universidad Santa María (1999-2000) and postgraduate professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (2003), the Universidad Católica del Táchira (2005) and Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (2005- 2019). He has also been a professor of the Diploma in Hydrocarbons at the Universidad Monte ávila and has recently been invited as a professor on International Investment Law and Arbitration in the LL.B. course at Brunel University London.
Paul Kinninmont
Paul specialises in international arbitration – commercial and investment, institutional and ad hoc – as well as related injunctive relief and award enforcement. Paul’s arbitration experience encompasses different geographies, applicable laws, seats and sectors, including joint ventures, renewable energy, oil and gas, construction, life sciences, technology and project finance. He has frequently co-counselled efficiently and effectively with legal practitioners from countries around the world.
Having drafted several New York Convention compliant awards, Paul accepts appointments as an arbitrator. He is also an accomplished litigator at first instance and on appeal, again across a range of sectors. Please see below for further details.
Paul deploys his expertise to help clients to mitigate political risk when structuring transactions and/or to advise clients on how best to draft contracts to ensure enforcement of their contractually agreed allocation of risk. He is adept at dispute avoidance, settlement and mediation.
Paul is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators. He holds an LLM in International Dispute Resolution, speaking at industry events and lecturing regularly.
