Peter Marsden CEO and Director of Programmes at Concordis International
Peter took us around the world and spoke of his experiences negotiating in countries where lack of resolution would lead to death, assault, and violent conflict.
Aims of his organisation to ensure that in matters of armed conflict people have tools they need to negotiate properly.
The key thing was to identify the root cause, and ensure that this was addressed. Otherwise, a so-called agreement would unravel in the future.
Community mediators and peace builders need to be trusted to manage conflict.
Spoke about the human shift, finding some common thread to be able to relate to the armed person in front of you, whether it be occupation, interest, hobby, sport.
Conflict transformation and what happened the next day.
Good peace agreements also bind in the negotiators.
How not including women (some who are, or due to circumstances have had to become as ferocious as the men in the room holding the weapons) can lead to agreement falling apart.
Peter’s key point was to think about the next days, and the future and how it would look.
Natalie Reynolds
Spoke of Behavioural science how it applies.
Key takeaways
Anyone can negotiate it doesn’t come from job title. Her passion is to make it accessible to all.
In the front of your mind remember Who are they? What do they want? Why do they want it?
Spoke of difficulties that arise post handshake pre-paperwork, when reviewing or speaking to others which then leads to lack of an actual settlement.
Natalie ended by urging us all to always have an explorer mindset.
The audience very much appreciated this talk, and discussions and thanks continued during the drinks.
