professor, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada,
and now as an independent arbitrator
• Draw on Ms McLachlin's extensive experience to provide
younger practitioners with guidance on developing the right
skills to pursue a career in commercial law and arbitration
The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin practised as a lawyer and
professor before accepting her first judicial appointment at the County Court
of Vancouver in 1981. She was appointed to the British Columbia Court of
Appeal in 1985, and then to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989. She was
appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 2000 and
retired in 2017. During this time, Ms McLachlin participated in 2,094
Supreme Court judgments – of which she wrote 442 – which included a wide
range of subjects in corporate, construction, financial services, taxation,
contract, and other areas of business law.
Since retiring from the Supreme Court of Canada in 2017, Ms McLachlin
practises at Arbitration Place as an arbitrator and mediator in Canada and
internationally. Ms McLachlin also sits as a Justice of Singapore's
International Commercial Court and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal.
