On 7th July 2021, CIArb London Branch held its Lunchtime Discussion Webinar on the topic of “Getting best use from Experts”.

The event was the fourth of a series of roundtable webinars for members of the London Branch organised by Branch Vice-Chair Daniel Djanogly. The distinguished speakers - Roderick Cordara QC, SC and Philippa Hill made short presentations which were followed by a lively and informative discussion among attendees. The discussion was moderated by Paul Rose the Immediate Past Chair of the London Branch.

The discussed topics included:

A. Can a party-appointed independent expert assist the client and advisers by providing advice in a consulting capacity and if so, how far can they go to assist? What is the optimum time to get them involved? What are the pros and cons of having a ‘dirty’ expert who is separate from your Part 35 expert witness?

B. Is it more efficient and effective to have a ‘one size fits all issues’ expert or separate experts covering separate topics? Do too many experts spoil the broth?

The concise presentations were followed by a lively discussion between the panellist and attendees. The topics involved the issues regarding disclosure, initial assessments, use of CPR 35, hot tubbing, different approaches to cross-examinations of experts in various jurisdictions and many more.

A large number of the attendees joined the webinar with video by asking questions and making their comments and contributions which demonstrates a vital interest in the discussed matters.
